Attention management, the practice of controlling distractions and maximizing focus, is something we’ve found a challenge for many students. Our goal is to spread awareness and create a space where students can experiment with their study environments to see what settings they work best in.

Design Challenge: Improving Attention Management On Campus

Research
Information Gathering
  1. attention management: practice of controlling distractions, being present in the moment, finding flow, and maximizing focus. Being intentional instead of reactive
  2. group interview with 4 students at student union
  3. one on one interview with 3 students
Design Process
  1. common misconception of productivity: “best way to be productive is managing your time”
  2. need more emphasis on training our attention management, such as practice focusing and avoiding distractions techniques
  3. attention management is like a muscle, it needs to be exercised and it connects to your physiology
  4. identified themes of contributing factors: internal/external distractions, mindset, mood

Paper Prototype

Using concepts from our brainstorming sessions and our design principles

Final Design & Rationale
Why Will This Work?
  1. takes into account internal and external factors while also spreading awareness
  2. allows students to learn about attention management and experience through study sessions with environments set up on 1st and 2nd floors
  3. gives students the opportunity to figure out what’s best for them
Next Steps
  1. prototype to meet all types of focus/study needs
  2. Test on more people for more feedback logistics of concept: spacing, water piper, etc.
  3. costs involved with implementation of prototype
